Well as promised in the last blog, I have loaded a new Album of the 1978/79 F1 season. These pics have never seen the light of day and never previously been published. Slightly different as most of the pictures are within the confines of the pits during that era. Without a doubt some of the best cars and iconic drivers.
A young South African named Richard Chandler decided to take himself overseas and follow the circuit around the world. He managed to scrounge a "gofer" job with the Wolf Racing Team which entailed working Jody Scheckter as the "gofer".
In 1979 he became amongst his "gofer" work the designated driver for Jody Scheckter's Winnebago for the European stint of the championship.
Richard was fondly remembered by the team by his nickname "Springbok". whilst he had time he took a number of pictures which I have added as an album in the gallery section.
These pictures were unearthed in boxes in Richard's Garage at home after 40yrs in storage. Richard unfortunately passed in 2011 from Motor Neuron Disease and His wife whilst cleaning out gave them to me to publish. Richards also handed Jody's championship gloves from Monza in 1979. These will be auctioned off shortly as per his wishes and proceeds will go to MND research and the South African Motorsport Legends Trust.
Hope you enjoy the pics.
Please take note of the pit lanes and all the drivers which had personal sponsorship on their overalls, totally different to days corporate get ups!!
AAARGH those were the days......
