Car No. 50 ELVA-PORSCHE MK7 - Owner/ Driver CLIVE WINTERSTEIN
After the heydays of success with a series of Spyders in the 1950's,
Porsche found itself in the uncharacteristic position of being beaten
by a new generation of purpose-built, lightweight English
racing cars. At the time Porsche was known to have the
most powerfuland lightweight 2 liter 4-Carb racing engine,
and Elva wasknown to have the best chassis.
Elva Porsche MKVII ordered by Dr Dawie Gouws in March 1965
at a price of 1200 pounds (excluding engine and g/b which Dawie already had .
It arrived in Cape Town on the 20th May, the first race it entered was
on the 5 June 1965. It campaigned around the country including LM and Luanda
over the next say 8years while it was competitive. Drivers included champions like
Koos Swanepoel, Bobby Oltoff, Luki Botha and naturally Dawie Gouws.
I bought it from Howard Robinson in 2010, it had no engine
or gearbox and the wrong body, Andrew Thompson rebuilt the car while I sourced the right Porsche 4 cam engine and gearbox.
It was finally finished in May 2013.The car has raced at every race track in RSA since then.
Interesting to note , only 18 of these cars were built and only 2 had upright cooling fans and this is one of those two.
Serial No.: 70-67 Engine:
Porsche 4-Cam Carrera Number Produced: 17
Weight: 550kg
